The Abandoned Land of Oz Theme Park Would Probably Even Creep Out the Wicked Witch

 

Back in 1970, a theme park called The Land of Oz opened its doors in the resort town of Beech Mountain, North Carolina, attracting thousands of visitors.

The Land of Oz featured everything that you’d imagine from L. Frank Baum’s fantasy children’s novel, including a yellow brick road that leads to Emerald City, the tin man, the scarecrow, and even the Wicked Witch of the West. Apparently, the original designers of the park were advised not to watch the legendary film and instead base their plans off the book itself.

Then, in 1980, the park closed down after failing to attract the crowds.
Its decline occurred shortly after a fire destroyed the parks main attraction, the Emerald City exhibit, in 1976.
As you can imagine, over the years nature ran its course and gradually deteriorated what was left standing. There were also occasional instances of trespassers vandalizing.
The Land of Oz only opens for one October weekend annually. For the remainder of the year, it is absolutely abandoned.
